Intel from robin coello and her band of VICTINI HUNTERS had led their group to the icy depths of Shoal Cave.[break][break]

It was a somewhat familiar cast. Gideon recognized Caleb Harcourt, of course, having partnered with him on a few occasions in the past. But PENELOPE LIVY — he'd only worked with her in the briefest of capacities, such as the masquerade at his museum years ago.[break][break]

Pulling his parka closer around him, GIDEON GRAVES surveyed the way ahead. It was a cavernous expanse: a wide chamber with several branching paths splitting at its sides.[break][break]

Caleb has absolutely no clue where to go, but for some reason - pride, perhaps? - he doesn't want GIDEON GRAVES to know that.[break][break]
Luckily for him, he'd brought Nox along.[break][break]
"You ever watch Raiders of the Lost Archeops?" Caleb flashes the museum curator a wry grin. "These things are never easy." He glances at the Lokix by his side. "Lead the way."[break][break]
The insect's wings buzz with anticipation as he attempts to DETECT the wisp of Victini. A few second pass, then he stiffens, turning to face the long, winding corridor to Caleb's left. His antenna flick eagerly, and he bounds off ahead.[break][break]
"Come on," he waves to Gideon and PENELOPE LIVY, indicating that they should follow him. He's a Ranger, so it makes sense for them to trust him to be in charge of their impromptu operation, right? Right.[break][break]
It's odd, though, to say the least: to be here, doing something potentially dangerous, with perhaps the only two people on earth he might consider rivals. And despite his better judgement - despite the burning jealousy that bubbles beneath the surface of his otherwise calm demeanor - Caleb can't help but feel the weight of responsibility on his shoulders: to keep two (well, three, counting himself) of ollie morales's favorite people alive. The last time he'd encountered anything related to Victini, someone had died.[break][break]
They aren't in the Border. There will be no coming back this time.[break][break]
She's an Avatar, he thinks, of the Councilwoman. Hopefully that'll make a difference.

GIDEON GRAVES exhaled through his nose in a quasi-laugh. [break][break]

"The archeology in those movies is so unrealistic," The professor remarked good-humoredly, but followed after Caleb Harcourt's LOKIX regardless. "Let's hope there's no booby traps ahead."[break][break]

The small group careened to the left, funneling into a more narrow, ice-coated passageway — still large enough for them to walk shoulder to shoulder, but forcing the trio to get a little closer than they had before.[break][break]

PENELOPE LIVY's questioning perked his attention her way, but Gideon refrained from answering, as she'd directed the somewhat cutting query to Caleb Harcourt.[break][break]

He could practically feel the heat roiling off her words.

Positive thoughts - perhaps even hopeful ones - regarding PENELOPE LIVY's involvement in their little adventure evaporate the moment she decides to insult him.[break][break]
"My gut has saved my own life more times than not," he mutters under his breath, forcing his jaw to unclench. He does not turn around, or cut back at her with some equally hot-tempered retort: it won't do them any good if they start fighting each other.[break][break]
With an effort, he schools his expression into something resembling a neutral focus (hopefully). The passageway begins to narrow, and he reluctantly brushes shoulders with GIDEON GRAVES. They're nearly the same height, he realizes. Which brings their heads awfully close together.[break][break]
He tries to ignore this, too.[break][break]
They aren't in the tunnel for long. It suddenly opens up to reveal a massive underground lake, frozen over with ice. It glitters in the low light of the Tera crystals attached to the ceiling, softly glowing an eerie white-blue. Caleb's brow furrows, a spike of apprehension filling him at the sight of the prolific anomalies.[break][break]
"Guess those things grow everywhere now," He notes. "Keep an eye out for paradoxes."
